Amber Flatt named Kerr Teacher of the Year

Amber Flatt has been selected as the 2023-2024 Kerr Elementary Teacher of the Year!

"I teach art, problem solving skills, and encourage creative thinking to artists in pre-K-5th grade."

Amber joined Team Tulsa in 2017 as a teacher assistant and became a teacher the following year through Tulsa Teacher Corps.

"I got into education later in life after having many careers in the arts and communications fields. While I was working on my Bachelors of Fine Arts degree, I worked for an afterschool program called Young Rembrandts. I taught basic art skills to K-5 grade and it was so much fun. Once I finished my degree, I worked as a freelance photographer and graphic designer, but missed working with kids, so I went to seek how to become an art teacher."

Amber has worked at Kerr for five years now. In addition to teaching, Amber is the site instructional resource coordinator and Any Given Child coordinator at Kerr. She also volunteers with Bike Club and Yearbook Club.

"I continue to grow every day as a teacher and strive to build strong relationships with my young artists and scholars so that I can help them create their dreams," said Amber. "I owe my success, in part, to the amazing colleagues and family I have at Kerr Elementary and across Tulsa Public Schools who encouraged me to keep my head high and work hard through all the doubts and tears. There aren’t enough words to express how appreciative I am of them all."

Outside of work, Amber is passionate about her family.

"Everything I do in my life is done to encourage my children to reach for their dreams, to show them that working hard and being a good person pays off and kindness in abundance can change the world, even if only for one person."
